What You'll Be Doing

Reports to a Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services and is responsible for directing the hospital's Pharmacy program in accordance with laws relating to the storage, compounding and distribution of medications.  Regularly contacts pharmaceutical vendors in order to obtain bids and/or negotiate prices.  Establishes department purchasing parameters and oversees acquisition, storage and inventory maintenance of pharmaceutical medications and supplies.  Establishes and maintains record keeping systems for recording patient charges and maintaining adequate controls over requisitioning and dispensing of all pharmaceuticals. Regularly consults with medical staff regarding information obtained on medications and use of drug therapy.  Serves as the Secretary of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, secures approval of, implements, monitors adherence to and administers department policies and procedures and ensures they are in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, the standards of practice as prescribed by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the standards of hospital services identified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
  • Recommends and implements agreed upon long and short-term departmental goals and objectives in order to enhance department services.
  • Prepares, secures approval of, and administers capital expense and operating budgets for the department. Monitors adherence to budget and initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Develops and administers Pharmacy programs and services, ensuring prompt and accurate preparation and distribution of medications to patients.
  •  Evaluates new pharmaceutical drugs, supplies and equipment. Makes recommendations for acquisition of new or additional pharmacy equipment and supplies.
  • Regularly contacts pharmaceutical vendors in order to obtain bids and or negotiate prices; establishes purchasing parameters; and oversees acquisition, storage and distribution of supplies. Continually reviews the purchasing activities so as to maintain the quality of pharmaceuticals purchased as well as maintain the lowest possible acquisition cost consistent with the established quality standards.
  • Interviews, hires, and evaluates the performance of, and, when necessary, disciplines and discharges pharmacy personnel in accordance with the policies and procedures of' Bayonne Hospital.
  • Develops and maintains a quality improvement program with appropriate monitors that review the pharmacy services provided.
  • Reviews stock levels for pharmaceutical supplies held in inventory, continuallysearches for innovative methods of reducing the investment in inventory per good materials management standards.
  • Ensures effective drug information is provided for physicians, nurses and other health professionals associated with the hospital.
  •  Monitors processing of pharmacy charges to ensure that patient charges are accurate and submitted on a timely basis.
  • Provides for in-service education and up-date programs for department subordinates as well as other clinical department personnel.
  • Continually reviews professional journals. articles, and reports and attends seminars and workshops in order to maintain professional knowledge of current trends and developments in the field. Establishes a program of support for departmental professional staff to improve their knowledge of current medications and pharmaceutical practices.
  • Serves as the Secretary of the MUNC Committee and on other hospital committees as assigned.
  • Complete any other assignments given by the Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services who is responsible for the Department of Pharmacy.

Responsible for daily monitoring, evaluating, and facilitating the revenue collection and clinical documentation process associated with revenue capture. This will include but not be limited to:

 

  • Reviewing patients’ charts for completeness and verifies that all information is accurately documented on the charge sheet   
  • identifying lost charges and coordinating charge capture
  • documenting additions and correcting errors to charge sheet according to departmental standards
  • Communicating departmental charging issues to the appropriate department staff
  • Providing ongoing education for staff to communicate and improve charge capture and documentation

What We're Looking For

  • Is a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education and is oriented to and knowledgeable in the specialized functions of hospital pharmacists, or has completed a hospital pharmacy residency program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. An advanced degree in Pharmacy with an emphasis on management skills is desirable.
  •  Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with a wide variety of hospital personnel, patients, members of the community and effectively lead pharmacy personnel.
  •  Analytical skills necessary to prepare and administer budgets, evaluate current methods of delivering service to patients and assess the effectiveness of these methods, and recommend new techniques and procedures.
