What You'll Be Doing

The Senior Coding Specialist will be responsible for verification of services, coding, abstracting and data
entry of inpatient and outpatient medical records in adherence to regulatory guidelines and reporting
requirements for appropriate reimbursement and statistical analysis/reporting.
The successful candidate will be able to:
Assigns accurate diagnosis and procedure codes to patient records using ICD-10-CM & PCS and
CPT Coding Schemes.
• Reviews medical record for proper assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes according to aha
coding guidelines, CMS regulations
• Utilizes all available resources to properly assign diagnosis and procedure codes
• Communicates with physicians when documentation is not complete or when clarification is
required for accurate code assignment
• Ensures complete processing of records for each day coded and completes departmental procedure
when unable to code a record due to lack of sufficient information
• Reports work status to team leader in established format meets specified departmental
productivity/quality standards
o Inpatient Coding 1-3 per hour
o Outpatient Coding 5-10 records per hour
• Performs as technical support for clinical documentation specialists Corrects patient type and
validates correct operative/revenue code for ops and same day procedures

 

Abstracts required data from patient records and performs data entry functions for required data
elements and ICD-10-CM &PCS and/or CPT codes
• Verifies patient demographic data for accuracy and completeness by comparing data in computer
system with the medical record
• Abstracts required data from the medical record, including, but not limited to, attending physician,
discharge disposition, ICD-10 CM and/or CPT diagnosis and/or procedure codes, and physician
consultation
• Completes data entry/coding correction function according to department policy
Assists in the processing of outpatient medical records
• Retrieves and verifies receipt of emergency room records
• Notifies appropriate departments when records have not been received.
Contributes to the overall operation of the department to ensure that customers receive quality
services
• Performs applicable functions in the hospital computer system
• Locates, pulls, and files records and/or reports
• Complies with policies and procedures related to medicolegal matters including confidentiality,
release of information and patient’s rights
• Recognizes and reports problems, errors, and discrepancies in medical records to team leader
• Retrieves and verifies receipt of ER records
• Performs other duties as requested

 

What We're Looking For

High School Graduate/GED; Associate Degree preferred.
• Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Health Information Management required; 8+ preferred.
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)/ Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
• Strong business acumen and ability to pick up concepts quickly.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Hands-on experience with Meditech a plus!
